1965 Shelby Cobra 427 S/C
This eye-catching beauty is a British-American sports car with a Ford V8 engine sold in the US as the Shelby Cobra. The Shelby, or AC, Cobra has been produced on-and-off since 1962. Originally a pure British import, it has since been produced in both the UK and the United States. The AC Cobra has a long and storied history and the specific model we repaired was the 1965 Cobra 427 S/C. The S/C stands for semi-competition model, truly earning the moniker of a high-performance vehicle.
1965 Shelby Cobra 427 Semi-Competition
The Cobra 427 was the MkIII, designating the chassis the vehicle required. This saw the implementation of 101.6 mm (4 in.) main chassis tubes, an increase from the 76.2 mm (3in) used in previous models. Additionally the coil spring suspension was implemented, replacing the previously used transverse leaf spring. The distinctive look is highlighted by the wide fenders and large radiator opening.
Under the hood the Cobra 427 turned heads with it’s “side oiler” Ford 7.0 L FE Engine featuring a single 4-barrle 780 CFM Holley carburetor putting out 425 hp at 6000 rpm. This gargantuan powerhouse gave the Cobra 427 a top speed of 164 mph in the standard model. However, the Cobra 427 S/C delivers 485 hp giving way a top speed of 185 mph.
