1989 Mercedes-Benz 560 SL R107
The 1989 Mercedes-Benz 560 SL is truly an iconic vehicle. The SL-Class is a Mercedes-Benz grand tourer sports car roadster that has been a mainstay of the manufacturer since 1954. The SL is derived from the company’s native German and stands for Super-Leicht – super light in English. The model we had the pleasure of working on was the last year of production for the third generation model, spanning from 1971 up until 1989. Interestingly enough, the 560 SL model featuring the 5.5-liter engine was only available in the US, Canada, Japan, and Australia due to emission regulations at the time
Repairs & Refinish
The vehicle owner wanted to fix some damage on the fenders and apply a new coat of finish as well. We pulled the vehicle in, began disassembly, and got to work. The repairs went smoothly as did the stripping of the paint via chemical solvents. When refinishing older vehicles, it sometimes becomes necessary to strip previous paint codes in order to guarantee proper chemical adhesion. When there are too many coats on a panel, the paint has trouble adhering to the panel so there’s really no option but to strip the paint.
